About our Horses
Our horses are either full draft or half draft horses. Our horses are the most important part of our team. Rest assured that they are loved, well cared for and they love their jobs. They receive massages, chiropractic adjustments and are on a regular schedule with the farrier. We also have annual vet checks with our veterinarian and animal control every year. Our horses are highly trained and it is during this training process that we find out if the horses like to pull downtown. We only keep them if they are happy with this job. Just like people, horses like different environments and different jobs. However, that doesn't mean that they will never spook etc because horses are known to do so without warning or apparent cause.
When it is time for our horses to retire, they usually go with one of our carriage drivers. Our carriage drivers form strong bonds with the horses they work with.
About Draft Horses:
Draft horses are a large horse breed bred to haul/pull.
Draft horses range from approximately 16-19 hands (1 hand equals 4 inches) high and from 1,400-2,000 pounds. They can pull 2-3 times their body weight.
The wheels on the carriage and the even ground also make it easier for them to pull.
