Animal Caretakers, or Stable Hands, are considered the “backbone” of the Blue Ribbon Carriages operation. The stable staff is in charge of the very important task of caring for and maintaining safety for our precious carriage horses. The hard work done as a Caretaker maintains a quality work environment for not only our horses, but the entire Blue Ribbon Carriages staff. It is the stable staff’s responsibility to maintain barn systems and schedules, to anticipate and troubleshoot issues as they arise, and to efficiently communicate with supervisors and fellow employees.
Feeding and watering horses twice daily
Managing horse turnout schedule
Diligently securing horses in their correct pastures and stalls to ensure horse and employee safety
Observing horse behavior: recognizing and responding to issues (EXAMPLES: colic, injuries, breathing problems lameness, etc.)
Reporting issues in horse health or behavior to supervisor for further direction
Maintaining organization and cleanliness of barn (Including, but not limited to: sweeping, removing trash, dumping muck buckets)
Stripping and resetting stalls as needed to maintain excellent stall quality
Completing heavy duty barn tasks as directed by supervisor (Including, but not limited to: scrubbing water/ feed buckets, cleaning bathroom, mowing grass, pulling weeds, etc.)
All applicants MUST have the following:
the ability to lift 50lbs on a regular basis without assistance
physical agility and the capacity to work in an active environment where you will often perform strenuous physical tasks
flexible schedule with night, weekend, and holiday availability
ability to work in all weather conditions
horse handling experience required
Blue Ribbon Carriages offers private horse-drawn carriage rides and guided tours in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. Available for weddings, anniversaries, parades, and other private events.
